Dear Tulane Community:
Black History Month arrives at another moment of pain for the very members of our society it was meant to honor, as the nation and our university mourn the horrific death of Tyre Nichols.
These events underscore the need and value of each of us working to build a more just, equitable and inclusive society. At Tulane, we are committed to continuing the work of building a university that welcomes and supports Black students, faculty and staff, providing them with an inclusive and equitable teaching, learning and work environment through which they can make Black history themselves.
Black History Month is an opportunity for all of our community to consider how we can do more to build the type of university and world we all desire and deserve. We can also learn more about the excellence embedded in Black heritage and history and remember the important contributions past and current Black Tulanians have made to our university. Some of these are highlighted through the Trailblazers program.
In honor and celebration of Black History Month, I urge you to attend and participate in the many events taking place this month across the university.
Taking an active part in celebrating Black History Month and keeping its spirit alive throughout the year can help unite us as one university family where the contributions of Black leaders, scientists, physicians, architects, entertainers, artists and individuals in all areas of our campus and community are acknowledged, shared and held up as an example and inspiration for all.
