Dear Tulane Community:
On Monday, we will observe Memorial Day by remembering and honoring those who died while serving in the U.S. military. The long list of fallen heroes includes many Tulanians, as well as family members and loved ones of the Tulane community.
Some of those we will honor on Memorial Day were once members of the Tulane Reserve Officers Training Corps, which dates back to 1938. As Tulane graduate Gen. David H. Berger, the 38th commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, told the 18 new officers he commissioned on Saturday, “conviction, courage and integrity” are all essential to leading and serving. We thank all of those who exemplified these values through their service and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
As Memorial Day approaches, we are also ever-mindful of the devastating events that unfolded this week at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. We grieve with the families of those who lost children and friends in this and other horrific and senseless acts of violence. Through the Violence Prevention Institute, the Center for Youth Equity and numerous other efforts we are using Tulane research and expertise to address the issue of gun violence in our society. In doing this, we hope to save lives and make our country stronger, while honoring the children and other victims of this unspeakable tragedy.
