Hurricane Zeta Update

October 29, 2020

Dear Tulane Community:

It’s been quite a semester! Tulane has weathered Zeta with uncommon resilience and good cheer. I walked campus last night and this morning and met with students at The Commons. All are safe, in good spirits and talking about what it was like to be in the eye of a hurricane. While classes have been cancelled today and campus will remain closed to all but essential personnel, students have power in their residence halls and other vital campus buildings. At this point, we are still making campus damage assessments, though they do not appear to be serious. We will make an announcement regarding Friday’s classes and operations later today.

Unfortunately, at the moment much of the city remains without electricity. We are very mindful of the downed trees and other damages our faculty, staff and students may be facing. We have reached out to our off-campus students and are assisting them in every way we can.

Now that the storm has passed, it is critical that we continue to exercise caution. Please remain indoors and off the streets other than to get food or medicine. There are downed power lines and other hazards in the city that can cause serious harm. We also need to keep the streets cleared for those who are cleaning up and working diligently to restore power. And, as you continue to shelter in place, please remember to practice all COVID-19 safety protocols, including wearing face coverings and maintaining social distance.

While this storm has caused damage and inconvenience, I am grateful that the Tulane community is safe and intact and will soon return to its mission of teaching, discovery and service. Be well!

Mike
